Posted by topform

Cyber Crime Cell has issued a statement which says that College Students are allegedly using Orkut and other social Networks

to target people they don’t like and indulging in character assassination.

Times of India covers the complete article.(ReadMore)

Highlights from the Article

Cyber Crime Cell - college students are allegedly using sites like Orkut, Facebook and MySpace to target people they don’t like by creating fake profiles, posting abuses, obscene pictures of their friends or giving out personal detail like telephone numbers, addresses and e-mail ids. In other words, character assassination.

Police - More often than not, the perpetrator is a boy who wants to get back at a girl who has spurned his affections.

Cyber Crime Cell - We get at least one case a month from a popular networking site who’s privacy levels are known to be a little lax.

> The IP addresses will enable the Cell to track down people who have posted messages and book them if the need arises, police officials said.

Google Earth 5 Plus the Ocean & Mars

Posted by topform
Google Earth 5, the latest version of Google's 3D geo-browser, brings an important feature from the discontinued Google Earth Plus, which used to cost $20/year. You can now read tracks and waypoints from a GPS device like Magellan and Garmin and you can import GPS files in GPX and LOC format.

Another interesting new feature is the ability to visualize geographical changes over time. Google Earth shows historical imagery that goes back to the 40s in some places like San Francisco.

If you find an interesting way to visualize a location, there's a new "record a tour" option that saves the places you visit in Google Earth and lets you replay the tour. Unfortunately, you can't export a tour in a video format using the free version of Google Earth, but the good news is that you can record a voice commentary.

Google Earth is no longer just about the Earth and stars, now you can use it to view imagery and terrain of Mars by clicking on the planet icon.
While all these additions useful, you'll most likely download Google Earth 5 to explore the ocean. "Dive beneath the surface and visit the deepest part of the ocean, the Mariana Trench. Explore the ocean with top marine experts including National Geographic and BBC. Learn about ocean observations, climate change, and endangered species. Discover new places including surf, dive, and travel hot spots and shipwrecks."

Google Earth 5 for Windows, Linux and Mac can be downloaded from earth.google.com. The Windows version is not download directly: you first install Google Update, which downloads the setup and then installs the application. For those who can't use Google Update, here's a direct link to the Windows client.

Tip: Before installing Google Earth, read the user guide.

Mobile phone - an emergency tool for survival

Posted by topform

Here are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:

Emergency
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their mobile phone from your cell phone.
Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other 'remote' for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).
Note: It didn't work fine! I tried it out and it did not unlock my car!

Hidden Battery Power
Imagine your mobile battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370# Your mobile will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your mobile next time.
Note: This too didn't work fine!

How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone * # 0 6 #
A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

How SMS Works ?

Posted by topform in

BTS - Base Transceiver Station (Antenna)
BSC - Base Station Controller
MSC - Mobile Switching center
HLR- Home Location Register
VLR - Visitor Location Register
SMSC - Short Message Service Center

When a user sends an SMS, the request is placed via the MSC. The MSC forwards the SMS to the SMSC where it gets stored. The SMSC queries the HLR to find out where the destination mobile is and forwards the message to the destination MSC if the destination mobile is available. If the mobile is not available the message gets stored in the current SMSC itself. In most installations If a mobile is not available for SMS delivery the SMSC will not retry. Instead the destination MSC will inform the SMSC when the mobile comes back in range.SMS handling is a store and forward operation unlike USSD.

SMS has got a validity period, for which it will wait for the destination mobile to the available. After that time the SMSC will delete the message. The validity period can be set by the user. Normal validity is 1 day.

3-Player Chess~~~~interesting!!!

Posted by topform
Recently I came across this fascinating version of chess(passed on to me by my friend Karthikeyan). I didn't have an opportunity to play it. You need a different chess board to play it, but the concept itself is beautiful!3-way chess is a chessboard on which three people can play. The same rules apply except for some slight variation on moves made through the center of the board.

The regular chess rules are used, although the shape of the board is obviously different.

General rules:

1. The players take turns clockwise. The right of the first move is determined randomly.
2. The player who makes first check-mate wins.
3. The pawns move straight forward. Accordingly half of the pawns goes to the right, and the other half goes to the left.
The main characteristic of the game: if two players don't like the third, he is doomed.
The funny part of the game: the two players must compete for the privilege to check-mate the third.
I still prefer the 2 player chess which I am familiar with!

Be CareFUll !!

Latest survey undertaken by Career Builder shows that over 20% of employers in the U.S. use social networking sites to help hire potential future employees.

According to Carrier Builder Study, hiring managers they spoke to used popular social networking sites like orkut, facebook to check up on future potential employees.

Interestingly, these managers frequently drop the potential employees from their list because of what they saw on their profiles.

So don’t create a chill out orkut profile next time. Be sober and classy. Who know’s, your future Boss may be spying on your habits already :P

Step4
Open the run command and type C:\heap41a and press enter. This is a hidden folder. Delete all the contents of this folder.
Step5
Open the registry by typing regedit in the run box.
Search for heap41a in the registry by using the find command

Get Into Free Sites Without Registering

Posted by topform in
ARE YOU TIRED of having to register on a free Web site just to read a news article or view some pictures of your relatives? Rather than registering on such sites (and risking a barrage of annoying spam), many people forget about the news item or put off seeing how their nieces and nephews are doing until their next vacation. But I have an easy way to get members-only content without enduring the hassle of signing up for an account. Whenever family and friends send me links to registrationrequired sites, I turn to Bug- MeNot (www.bugmenot.com) to slip past most of these requirements. BugMeNot is a free site that stockpiles user-generated account logins and passwords so that users don’t have to provide their own personal info. If you use Internet Explorer, go to the BugMeNot Web site and type in the URL of the site that you’d like to log in to. BugMeNot will return a list of user names and passwords that you can use to log in successfully. The BugMeNot Firefox Ex - tension automates the service for Firefox users. On the in - stallation page (find.pcworld. com/62311), click Add to Firefox. Click Accept and Install, and a new window will open. When it does, click Install Now. Then restart Firefox. After you install the Bug- MeNot extension, the next time you encounter a re - quired log-in prompt for a free site, right-click the username or e-mail address box and select Login with BugMe- Not. Re peat the process if the initial attempt doesn’t work; the plug-in might have used old information the first time around. Otherwise, you should slide into the registration-required content without a hitch.
